:: About the Edinburgh Alternative Club Scene

Says one successful, longstanding Goth Promoter & DJ who moved south, about Edinburgh's alternative club scene. "I do not need to affirm my friendships by ostracizing other people.... I like to make up my own mind about people and don't like people telling me whom I should be friends with..;" and, "I am so glad I had the opportunity to move away from Edinburgh. There are still some people up there that I have a lot of respect for, but the scene is repugnant."

Most visitors to the city certainly find the locals 'unfriendly' and the clubs with a 'funny' atmosphere; Nightnews has heard visitors say, 'Whats wrong with these people!?,' time and time again!

Nightnews considers the following to have cast long shadows over the scene. A lot of the problematic individuals in the scene are NOT goth at all. Firstly, alt Edinburgh has a network of clubbers that consider themselves 'poly,' which to them means they have free licence to approach anyone at all. Monogamous dating couples seeing their partner approached may disagree and consider this to be 'sleazy.' Secondly, some alt clubbers have numbered themselves as 'Pagan's,' which to them means that, 'they can do as they will,' and as the preceding, have done untold damage. Those that know the full wiccan reed disagree with these false-pagans, because the full reed states; "Eight words the Wiccan Rede fulfill: As Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will." Thirdly, goth nights flirting with techno and dance in the early noughties not only introduced some new music but also new illegal substances into the scene, both of which diluted the customer base and actually lost some promoters their venues; therebye damaging the scene further! It also attracted a variety of drugged-up, usually cyberdog disguised and alcopop-crazed undesirables into what had been, 'something better.' Finally, several years of £1.00 a drink all night promos in a number of rock venues on Sundays (and at some points nearly every day of the week) further decimated (with muffin tops and alcoholism) the local goth and rock scene which has always been largely alcohol centred!

Unfortunately, even WORST than all of the above has also gone on; primarily internecine badmouthing, evil gossip and dirty tricks between certain club promoters and the fawning, obsequious, cliques that they have encouraged; this has also dragged the whole scene down and many of the old staple clubs are now in steady decline for that very reason. Pathetic attempts to run gothic monopolies by repeated attempts at undermining other clubs have proven hugely counter-productive.

Former old supporters have had enough and have voted with their changing tastes.... but you may make your own minds up about all of this yourselves at some of these Edinburgh nights...

On a more positive note, those fabulous clubbers that have been lost in droves by the old Edinburgh goth clubs have found new inspiration in other clubs like Vegas and the city's burgeoning burlesque club scene!

Other fashion and music conscious former goths that find the music policies and social structure of the old Edinburgh goth scene restrictive, have discovered that they can dress as goths if they like and enjoy unhindered, some of the city's finest, nu wave, post post-punk and post-goth indie nights; playing great tunes from retro 60's to progressive electronic and indie mixes.

As for the newly legal, until only recently underage kids coming out of unders-clubs such as the now defunct and infamous, 'mission junior;' (closed down by the police.) They are embracing a variety of styles loosely described as emo, indi-emo, post-hardcore, hardcore gabba, gabber, screamo, grindcore, post rock, psychobilly, 80's trad-power metal, contemporary goth-metal and just about everything but goth! These 'newbies' have generally found their home at the newly re-launched Hive (ex-Subway but in the former Honeycombe venue) in Niddry Street.

Overall, alternative people will continue to have fun but the new intake to the scene will be doing so in new clubs and venues, with different DJ's and dancing to a wider variety of musical genres! No wonder!
